Place D’Armes

Place D’Armes was once the main bustling area of medieval Calais. Alas, wartime devastation destroyed most of the original square leaving just the 13th-century watchtower – Tour de Guet – as a reminder of this time and artists seem to love capturing it on canvass. What once must have been a building with a noble purpose spends its time either surrounded by cars or market stands as during the week the square is used as a car park and every Wednesday and Saturday, it turns into a colourful open air market.

The inner square is hemmed by cafés, shops and is a short walk from the harbour where fine restaurants offer French gastronomic cuisine but is ringed with waterways on its outskirts.
